About Frontline Five EM

Stay current without reading every journal issue.

Five clinically meaningful studies each Friday—translated into what changed, how strong the evidence is, and what matters on shift.

Frontline Five EM is an independent medical-education platform created by Sean Williams, DO, an emergency medicine physician. It is built for medical students, residents, attending physicians, critical care clinicians, and educators.

Each briefing turns a week of new literature into a focused clinical review. We prioritize studies most likely to inform diagnosis, treatment, disposition, resuscitation, systems of care, or teaching.

Editorial standards

How each weekly five is built.

A transparent process keeps clinical relevance, evidence quality, and uncertainty at the center of every review.

  1. 01

    Literature identification

Recently published emergency medicine and applicable critical care research is reviewed from peer-reviewed journals and reputable medical publications.

  2. 02

    Study selection

Articles are prioritized by bedside relevance, methodological quality, importance of the clinical question, patient-centered outcomes, potential practice impact, and educational value. Journal prominence alone does not determine inclusion.

  3. 03

    Critical appraisal

Each selected paper is evaluated for study design, population, intervention, comparator, outcomes, statistical methods, limitations, risk of bias, and applicability to emergency care.

  4. 04

    Clinical synthesis

The recap presents the question, methods, principal results, evidence quality, limitations, practical implications, teaching pearl, and a concise bottom-line interpretation.

  5. 05

    Physician review

Before publication, each summary is reviewed by Sean Williams, DO, for clinical relevance, appropriate interpretation, and consistency with the cited source. Readers are encouraged to review the complete paper before changing clinical or institutional practice.

  6. 06

    Technology-assisted workflow

Technology-assisted research and drafting tools may support literature identification, organization, and initial content development. Final selection, interpretation, and publication decisions are subject to physician review; automated tools do not independently determine clinical recommendations.
